Who Am I?
How it started
As a millennial, I grew up believing the best thing I could do was get a job and hoard as much money as possible, until I could afford to buy myself a nice pile of debt.
I did what I was told and ended up at a 9-5 job in banking. I was miserable.
When I went freelance in 2015, I had no plan. I just KNEW I had to get out of the life I’d created, which felt like a prison.
I had conviction in my skills as a project manager and I wanted to be around creatives.
I told myself that as long as I worked really hard, everything would fall into place. And I was prepared to do anything.
At first it was all fun & games. I found work through my existing network and word of mouth.
Some months I was overloaded, but I still said yes to everything. I was people-pleasing left right and centre, and totally neglecting my own needs.
Other months I had nothing in the pipeline, and no idea what to do about it.
Over time I realised I wasn’t in control.
I didn’t have the confidence to be honest about what I wanted, or to trust that I’d be able to find it.
I had no real strategy and no idea how to position myself so the right opportunities could find me.
over and over and
over and over and
I was stuck in a cycle of feast and famine, stressed from either too much work or not enough.
It was my job to make content for brands, but communicating my own value felt impossible.
I overthought every word.
I’d write and rewrite, finally post, then refresh every 5 mins waiting for that one supportive comment.
If a post performed badly, I’d panic and hit delete.
The quiet times were scary. No engagement, no inquiries, no sign that anything I did was working.
And the periods of burnout were almost worse.
I kept telling myself, this is just how freelancing is.
But I knew there had to be a better way.
A turning point
We all want to work on our own terms, which is why we go freelance in the first place. The goal is to have some agency over how we spend our precious time.
We also know that we do our best work for our clients when we feel good.
I knew if I wanted that feeling, I couldn’t keep waiting for opportunities to find me. I had to create them. So I became proactive.
I asked myself the hard questions: Who am I? What do I have to offer? What do I actually want?
I figured out how to position myself, communicate my value clearly, and show up in a way that made the right people want to know me.
It wasn’t easy at first. I doubted myself. I still had moments of fear and second-guessing.
But once I became crystal clear on my vision, everything changed.
I went from accepting anything, to choosing the projects I actually wanted.
A new reality
I have learned that creating life changing opportunities and lasting partnerships isn’t just about being good at what you do.
It’s about knowing who you want to work with and why, understanding what that person needs, and communicating with them in a way that resonates.
Many freelancers stay stuck by doing busy work, like tweaking their website and telling random people they’re available, with no clear strategy.
My life changed when I stopped winging it and got intentional. That shift took me from an unpredictable income to a freelance career I could rely on.
What’s next
Now I get to help other freelancers achieve the same level of certainty.
The freedom you wanted when you started your business isn’t just about working for yourself, it’s also about having a say in how you work, who you work with, and what you create.
If you're tired of relying on luck and ready to take control, I’m here to help.
